We took the Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest out running to see how it fared in helping to keep us connected and hydrated
Are you tired of having to hold your phone or water bottle during your run or workout?
It’s important to stay hydrated so it’s a good idea to have a bottle of water with you during your runs or sessions – and having your phone with you means that you can track your metrics during your workout.
I like to listen to audiobooks or podcasts when I run so I’ll always have my phone with me but it’s not ideal having to hold my device in my hand.

Having launched in 2018, Freetrain have been providing athletes with products designed to give people more freedom while they train.
Their first challenge was finding the best possible solution to carrying your phone whilst you worked out.
This led to the Freetrain V1 Vest which was launched in 2019, proving an extremely popular product with athletes.
The vest proved perfect for runners, cyclists and casual gym-goers all over the world who wanted to work out and take their phone with them.
Since their launch, Freetrain have launched a number of other products that have the same unique selling point: giving athletes freedom!
The Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest is their latest offering so let’s take a closer look at this product.

Unlike the Freetrain V1 Vest, which you have to pull over your head before adjusting the straps to fit, the Hydro 1 Vest has a zip-front fastening feature.
You have to put both arms through the holes before zipping the vest in the middle to secure to your body. Once you’ve got the vest on, you can adjust the straps on either side to have a loose fit or a snug fit depending on your preference.
On the left side of the Hydro 1 Vest is the phone holder. You simply slot your phone into the holder and fasten the button.
To the right of the vest is the bottle holder. The Hydro 1 Vest comes with a soft 500ml water bottle that fits seamlessly in the bottle pocket. You can open or close the bottle holder pocket using the string tightening feature.
While these are the two standout storage features, the Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest also comes with some other subtle pockets and pouches. There’s a shoulder pocket and a back pocket so you’ve got a place to store keys or card holder.
The Fit, Feel And Style
The Freetrain V1 Vest was comfortable to wear but I much prefer the Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest.
It feels comfortable thanks to the design of the vest – it’s easy to put your arms through either side of the vest, and the zip-front fastener makes sure it’s snug.
I adjusted the straps to find my preferred fit and the vest felt tight enough that it was secure without feeling like it was suffocating me.
The Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest is made from durable lightweight material and has ventilation holes to keep you cool while you exercise so you’ll hardly notice you’re even wearing it.
The vest uses reflective print for added safety if you prefer to run at dawn, dusk or at night.
If your playlist throws up a song you don’t like or you get a call as you work out, it’s easy to unbutton the pouch and use the touchscreen.

Our Verdict
Having previously reviewed the Freetrain V1 Vest, I was excited to test out the Hydro 1 Vest.
I was really impressed with Freetrain’s latest running vest – the addition of a water bottle holder makes this an even more versatile product.
In fact, the bottle holder is so big that I was able to store a small face towel along with my bottle so I could dry off when I took some respite during my run.
The zip feature elevates the Hydro 1 Vest as it provides a snugger fit than the V1 Vest.
Compared to some rival products that I’ve tested, the Freetrain Hydro 1 Vest is the best option on the market for athletes who want a versatile workout vest.
