Compared to whey protein, vegan protein powders tend to be a little bit more expensive, but that shouldn’t be a too much of a problem if you’re happy to go for a high-quality product.

Before we get started, always remember that vegan protein powders are food supplements, and they are not intended to replace a healthy and balanced diet. Instead, supplements like this can be used from time to time to top up your protein intake, and they are best combined with a healthy diet and overall lifestyle.

As you probably already know, protein is an important macronutrient, and it contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. This is why it’s such a crucial dietary inclusion for gym goers and fitness enthusiasts.

If you stick to a vegan diet, then you’ll be relying solely on plant-based sources of protein, and sometimes a supplement can help to top up your intake from dietary sources.

Here’s what we looked for…

Here are some of the things we considered during our research and when choosing the vegan protein powders to feature on this page.

• Ingredients – We looked for products that use good sources of vegan protein, without the addition of unnecessary filler ingredients and sweeteners. Generally speaking, the cleaner the ingredients formula, the better.

• Taste – It goes without saying that taste is really important when it comes to a protein powder, especially as you may be consuming it on a regular basis. We picked out products that taste great even when mixed just with water, and favoured those that use natural sweeteners in the place of artificial ones.

• Company Reputation – We looked for products made by companies with a solid reputation here in the UK. We took a look to see what the manufacturers are all about, and examined whether they seem to have a good reputation amongst customers or not.

• Delivery Options – All of the supplement companies featured below offer fast delivery options in the UK and most of them are also British companies.

The Best Vegan Protein Powders in the UK

So, with the introductions out of the way, let’s kick off our look at some of the best vegan protein powders in the UK right now. We compiled this list using products we’ve both tried and tested, and others which we came across during our research.

Editor's note: The writer of this article has not necessarily tried the products featured. All product information provided is purely research based.

1) Form Nutrition Performance Protein

Product website: www.formnutrition.com

Form Nutrition Performance Protein

The first product on our list is the brilliant Performance Protein by Form Nutrition. Form Nutrition are a UK plant-based supplements company and we’re big fans of their main offering when it comes to vegan protein powder. The Performance Protein powder is a post-workout supplement containing curcumin, BCAAs, active bacteria, digestive enzymes and more, and it tastes great. It uses three plant-based sources of protein: Brown rice, hemp and whole algae protein. It’s currently available in Vanilla, Tiramisu and Chocolate Peanut (we love the Vanilla one). This protein powder has an awesome taste and uses stevia leaf extract and thaumatin as its two natural sweeteners, and it provides a complete amino acid profile, including 5g of Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). This vegan protein powder is sweetened with stevia and thaumatin – two natural sweeteners. It’s designed to be consumed straight after exercise to support you on your fitness journey. We’re big fans of the Performance Protein by Form Nutrition and we think you will be too. The only downsides are the larger price tag and the fact that you can’t buy a pouch bigger than 520g at the moment.

2) Huel Complete Protein

Product website: www.huel.com

Huel Vegan Protein Powder

Next on our list is Huel Complete Protein. You’ve probably already heard of the Huel brand, and their protein offering is a great vegan option if you’re looking for a protein powder. Huel describe this supplement as a “nutritionally complete” plant-based protein powder. It’s available to buy directly from the Huel website and comes in a range of flavours, including Banana Milkshake and Vanilla Fudge. There is also an unflavoured and unsweetened version if you’re looking for a clean and simple option. Huel Complete Protein uses hemp, faba and pea protein to deliver a total of 20g of protein per serving. It also includes 26 vitamins and minerals to support your intake from food. This supplement does use sucralose as the sweetener in the flavoured versions. You can buy two tubs together as a one-off order directly from the Huel website, or subscribe for a convenient regular delivery.

3) Bulk Vegan Protein Powder

Product website: www.bulk.com

Bulk Vegan Protein Powder

Next up is the Vegan Protein Powder made by Bulk. We’re big fans of Bulk’s supplements as they tend to offer great value for money without compromising on quality. Their Vegan Protein Powder supplement is their main offering when it comes to vegan protein and it’s a decent-tasting option that offers good value. It uses five different types of protein from vegan sources and it also uses a blend of digestive enzymes. The protein sources are: Pea Protein Isolate, Brown Rice Protein, Pumpkin Seed Protein, Flaxseed Powder and Quinoa Flour. It also contains blend of digestive enzymes and has a total of 23g of protein per serving. There are multiple flavours available, including Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut, Strawberry and Chocolate Mint, as well as an unflavoured version. The best place to buy this supplement is directly from Bulk on the official website. Their whole range of products offers great value for money and you can expect to receive your product within days of ordering it. Although we didn’t find it to be the best-tasting vegan protein powder we tried, this is a great vegan protein supplement if you’re on a budget and looking for something that gets the job done.

4) MyProtein Vegan Protein Blend

Product website: www.myprotein.com

MyProtein Vegan Protein Blend

MyProtein’s Vegan Protein Blend is the next product on our list. Like Bulk, we’re big fans of the MyProtein range of supplements. They tend to be made with great ingredients and offer good value for money. The Vegan Protein Blend is the main supplement that MyProtein offer in this category. It uses protein from Pea Protein Isolate and Fava Bean Isolate and contains 22g of protein per serving. It’s available in multiple flavours, including Chocolate, Strawberry and Banana. It also contains 5g of naturally-occurring BCAAs per serving. Like the other products on this list, it has a pretty clean ingredients formula and doesn’t feature any filler or unnecessary additions. It uses Sucralose as its main sweetener, which may not appeal to some people who are after more natural alternatives such as Stevia extract. This is a decent option if you’re looking for a no-nonsense vegan protein supplement for a reasonable price.

5) Protein Works Vegan Protein Powder

Product website: www.theproteinworks.com

Protein Works Vegan Protein

The final option on our list is the Vegan Protein from Protein Works. This is a good plant-based protein powder that’s available in a range of flavours and offers 25g of protein per serving. This supplement uses protein from five different plant-based sources: pumpkin seed, brown rice, sunflower, soy and pea. It contains digestive enzymes and uses sucralose as the sweetener to enhance taste. This supplement is available in a range of different flavours, including Salted Caramel, Vanilla Creme, Chocolate Mint Brownie and Cookies and Cream. Protein Works are a popular UK-based supplements company and this is their main offering when it comes to a vegan protein powder. At the time of writing, this protein powder is available in bags of 500g, 1kg, 2kg and 4kg. This is a solid option if you’re looking for a good-value vegan protein powder that comes in some quirky flavours.

Things To Look Out For and Avoid

As we’ve already mentioned, we tend to favour vegan protein supplements that use natural sweeteners rather than artificial ones.

If you’re looking for a quality vegan protein supplement, then choosing a product that uses a more natural sweetener such as Stevia or Thaumatin can be a better option.

It’s also important to focus on where the protein actually comes from in your supplement. There are loads of different types of vegan protein sources, including Brown Rice, Hemp, Pea and Quinoa.

It’s always worth doing some research into which one is likely to best support you and your fitness goals.

As we mentioned above, it’s also always worth doing some research into the supplement manufacturer to check their track-history and whether they are reputable or not.

Anything Else To Consider?

As we touched upon at the start of this guide, protein powders are food supplements, and food supplements are not intended to replace a healthy and balanced diet.

Instead, they are designed to be used alongside a healthy lifestyle and combined with a good diet and exercise regime.

As always, you should not take any new supplement without consulting with a certified medical professional if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Supplements like vegan protein powders are best used when combined into a personalised training and nutrition plan, and combined with good, healthy lifestyle choices. No supplement will work miracles on its own!
