Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker is a Brazilian footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Premier League side Liverpool FC.

The shot-stopper started his career with Brazilian club Internacional in 2013 after coming through the youth ranks at Beira-Rio.

He made his debut for Internacional in a 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in February 2013.

Alisson made 115 appearances for Internacional across four seasons before he was rewarded with a move to Serie A giants AS Roma in July 2016.

He made his debut for Roma in a 1-1 draw with FC Porto in the Champions League in August 2016.

Two years later, in the summer of 2018, the goalkeeper signed for Liverpool FC from AS Roma in a then-record deal.

Alisson established himself as Brazil’s number one goalkeeper ahead of the 2018 World Cup after making his full international debut in 2015.

He was a key part of Liverpool FC’s first-ever Premier League title triumph in the 2019-20 season.

Internacional

Alisson (full name: Alisson Ramses Becker) moved to Internacional’s youth academy at the age of ten.

He spent four seasons in the Brazilian club’s youth system.

Alisson made his debut in Internacional’s 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in the Campeonato Gaucho championship in February 2013.

Becker’s first appearance in the Brazilian Serie A came in a 3-3 draw with Golas in front of the home supporters in August 2013.

He competed with his brother Muriel for a starting spot for the remainder of the 2014 season.

Internacional signed AC Milan and Brazil legend Dida to compete with Alisson in the following campaign.

Becker managed to establish himself as a first-team regular in October. He went on to make 11 starts in the remaining months of 2014.

He made 57 appearances in 2015 to underline his growing importance to the Brazilian club amid talk of potential interest from Europe.

Alisson won four Campeonato Gaucho titles during his impressive run in the Internacional team.

Alisson made a staggering 108 saves during his final season at Internacional.

His impressive club form earned him a call-up to the Brazil squad for the first time.

AS Roma

Alisson put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement with Serie A club Roma in February 2016 – and the Brazilian shot-stopper signed a five-year deal for a €7.5m fee with the Italian giants.

His transfer went through in July 2016 as the Brazilian goalkeeper looked to challenge Poland international Wojciech Szczesny for the starting spot in goal in the AS Roma team.

His next start came a month later following AS Roma’s demotion to the Europa League following a 4-1 aggregate loss to FC Porto in the Champions League play-off round.

Alisson failed to keep a clean sheet in a 1-1 draw with Plzen in the Europa League group stage before the Brazilian goalkeeper featured in a 4-0 victory over FC Astra Giurgiu.

He went on to feature in both fixtures of their 7-5 aggregate loss Vienna before Alisson helped AS Roma to manage remain unbeaten against FC Astra Giurgiu and Plzen.

Alisson made 13 saves to keep help AS Roma ease to a 5-0 win against La Liga giants Villarreal in the Europa League round of 32. However, AS Roma lost to French side Lyon in the last 16 to end their participation in Europe prematurely.

He didn’t make an appearance for AS Roma in the Serie A during his first season at the club as he ended the campaign as the understudy to Szczesny.

However, the Poland international moved to Serie A giants Juventus in the summer transfer window with a view to becoming Gianluigi Buffon’s long-term replacement in 2017.

As a result, Becker made his first-ever Serie A appearance in a 1-0 win against Atalanta in the opening weekend of the season in 2017-18. A week later, he was powerless to prevent AS Roma from suffering a 3-1 loss to Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Alisson managed to keep a clean sheet in 0-0 draw with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stage.

The South American goalkeeper made six saves to help AS Roma to ease to a 3-0 win against Premier League champions Chelsea FC in the group stage to help take a big stride towards the knockout round.

One of his best performances of the campaign came in a thrilling 4-2 win over Serie A title rivals Napoli. Becker made 11 stops to help the Rome outfit to edge to a narrow win over their rivals.

Becker emerged with credit from AS Roma’s 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals after his seven saves limited the home side to four goals.

In the return leg, he made three stops to help AS Roma to ease to a 3-0 win against the Spanish side to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time.

Becker came up against Liverpool FC, a club who had been linked with a summer move to sign the Brazil international. The Reds were 5-2 winners against AS Roma in the first leg of the last four, although Alisson made seven saves.

The Italian giants eased to a 4-2 victory over Premier League side Liverpool FC in the second leg but crashed out of the competition on away goals.

Alisson made a total of 109 stops in 37 games in Serie A in the 2017-18 season. The Brazilian goalkeeper produced 46 saves in 10 Champions League appearances.

Liverpool FC

Becker was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool FC ahead of the 2018 summer transfer window. He also emerged as a potential candidate to replace Keylor Navas at Real Madrid.

However, he signed for Liverpool FC in a then-record deal for a goalkeeper on 20 July 2018, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who had completed a switch to Anfield from the Italian club in 2017.

The transfer fee was believed to be around £67m and he signed a long-term contract with the Merseyside outfit.

Alisson quickly established himself as the number one at Anfield and helped Liverpool FC to win the Champions League in 2018-19 and the Premier League in 2019-20.

In August 2021, Alisson signed a new long-term contract to keep him at Liverpool FC until the summer of 2027. His weekly salary was believed to be around £150,000 per week, although this figure was not confirmed.

International Career

Alisson made his senior debut for Brazil in the 3-1 win against Venezuela in their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in 2015.

Becker was part of the Brazil squad that played in the Copa America in 2016. However, he struggled to impress as A Selecao crashed out at the group stage.

He firmly established himself as Brazil’s number one thanks to help from former goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel, who featured at the 1998 World Cup.

Alisson was named in the Brazil squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Personal Life

Alisson’s elder brother, Muriel, is also a goalkeeper and was developed at Internacional.

Becker is married to Natalia Loewe, a physician from Brazil, in 2015. The couple have three children together.

Alisson’s father, Jose Becker, tragically died at the age of 57 in February 2021. He was found dead by a lake on the family’s ranch near the town of Lavras do Sul in southern Brazil.
