Mount was born in Portsmouth, England, in January 1999 and joined Chelsea FC’s youth set-up when he was just six years old back in 2005.
The midfielder enjoyed a steady development at Stamford Bridge and he made his senior debut for the south west London side in August 2019 under Frank Lampard.
Mount enjoyed a breakthrough season under Lampard in 2019-20 and helped the Blues to win the Champions League in 2020-21 under Thomas Tuchel.
So, how much do you know about Mount’s journey on his way to becoming a regular for England and Chelsea FC? This is his story.
Early Life, Parents And Upbringing
Mount was born on 10 January 1999 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England to parents Debbie and Tony. His father, Tony Mount, was a former non-league footballer who later also coached local clubs Havant Town and Newport.
“My dad was a manager and a player in the past, albeit not at a very high level, but he won a lot of trophies around local football in Portsmouth, where I was born and brought up,” explains Mount. “That’s where my love of the game must’ve come from, just watching him.
“I just remember coming back from school, putting a football kit on and going out to play with friends and kicking it off the curb on the street. That’s one of the earliest memories I have really.”
As a young child, Mount played for local sides Boarhunt Rovers and United Services Portsmouth. He also spent some time training at the Chelsea FC and Portsmouth academies.
However, it was Chelsea FC who eventually won the race for Mount when he was just six years old in 2005.

Mount’s dad Tony later explained that Chelsea FC showed lots of initiative to spot the young midfielder’s talent early on.
“As a kid, Mason trained with both Chelsea and Pompey, although I must say Chelsea were the first to spot him at the age of six, while he was playing for Boarhunt under Kev Neal and John McLaughlin,” said Tony Mount in an interview with portsmouth.co.uk in 2016.
“Pompey [Portsmouth] offered him a place in their academy at the age of seven and were spot on with us. Unfortunately, it just couldn’t compare with what he was doing at Chelsea – the level of football was amazing and we knew he would be given the opportunity to travel and play in tournaments across Europe.
“To have been with Chelsea since the age of six and gone the whole way through the age groups speaks volumes of Mason’s commitment and desire – he lives and breathes football.”
Mount signed his first professional contract with Chelsea FC in January 2016 when he had just turned 17 years old.
Mount’s first professional deal came as a reward for his fine form for the Blues at youth level. He made his debut for the club’s Under-18s in 2014 when he was 15 years old and was a regular for the Under-21s by 2016.
He scored 10 goals in 30 games in the 2016–17 U18 Premier League campaign as Chelsea FC won the trophy.
In May 2017, Mount was named as Chelsea FC’s Academy Player of the Year after helping the Blues’ Under-18s side retain the FA Youth Cup for a fourth successive year.
As well as the U18 Premier League success in 2016–17, he also won the FA Youth Cup twice and lifted the Uefa Youth League trophy in 2015-16.
Mount was also part of England side that won the 2017 European Under-19 Championships and was named the tournament’s best player.
It wasn’t long before Mount was promoted to the Chelsea FC senior team following his success at youth level with the south west London side.

Loan Spells
Mount was promoted to the Chelsea FC first team in July 2017. He signed a contract with the Blues until 2021, and was then sent on loan to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.
He enjoyed a fruitful season in the Netherlands, scoring 14 goals in 39 games in all competitions for the Dutch side, notching up 29 appearances in the Eredivisie.
Mount then joined Frank Lampard’s Derby County on loan for the 2018-19 campaign. “I know Mason really well from my Chelsea links and I have also watched him play in their very successful youth teams,” said Lampard on the day Derby signed Mount in July 2018.
He continued his impressive development in the Championship with Derby, scoring eight goals in 35 league games to help them finish in sixth place in the table. Derby reached the Championship play-off final but were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa in May 2019.

Breaking Into The Chelsea FC First Team
Mount returned to Chelsea FC following his loan spell at Derby – and his manager Lampard also followed him to Stamford Bridge when he was appointed as the club’s new boss on 4 July 2019.
The midfielder signed a new five-year contract with the Blues in on 15 July 2019, committing him to the club until at least 2024. It was to be a breakthrough season for the midfielder at Chelsea FC.
Mount finally made his full senior debut for Chelsea FC on 11 August 2019, when the Blues suffered a 4-0 defeat by Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford. He played the full 90 minutes but was unable to prevent his side from slipping to a disappointing defeat.
He scored his first goal for Chelsea FC’s first team when he netted the opener in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on 18 August 2019.
In doing so, Mount became the first English player to score on his first home appearance for Chelsea FC in the Premier League since Paul Hughes did so against Derby County in January 1997.

The midfielder made his Champions League debut in the group stage on 17 September 2019 when he started the 1-0 defeat by Valencia at Stamford Bridge. He suffered an injury early on and was replaced by Pedro Rodriguez in the 16th minute.
Mount scored seven goals and made five assists in 37 Premier League games in the 2019-20 campaign as Chelsea FC finished in fourth place in the table.
Thomas Tuchel was brought in as Lampard’s successor in January 2021. Mount then scored his first Champions League goal for Chelsea FC in the 2-0 win over FC Porto on 7 April 2021, netting the opener in the quarter-final first leg away from home.
Mount then added to his European pedigree when he scored Chelsea FC’s second goal in their 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash in Spain on 5 May 2021 to help the south west London side set up a final showdown with Manchester City.
In the Champions League final on 29 May 2021, Mount provided the assist for Kai Havertz to score the eventual winner in the 42 minute as Chelsea FC won the trophy for the second time in their history.
Following another successful campaign, Mount was named as Chelsea FC’s player of the year for 2021, becoming the youngest winner of the price – voted for by Blues supporters – for two decades. The last man to be awarded the prize at a younger age was John Terry.

International Career
The midfielder represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels.
In 2017, Mount helped England to win the Uefa European Under-19 Championship. He provided the assist for Lukas Nmecha to score the winner against Portugal in the final and was subsequently named as the player of the tournament.
Mount’s impressive performances did not go unnoticed by England manager Gareth Southgate, and the midfielder was called up to the Three Lions’ senior team for the Uefa Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain in October 2018, although he did not end up featuring.
He made his senior debut for the England national team on 7 September 2019 when he came on as a 67th-minute substitute in England’s 4–0 home win over Bulgaria in a Euro 2020 qualifier.
Mount scored his first senior goal for England on 17 November 2019 when he netted in a 4–0 away win against Kosovo in Euro 2020 qualifying.
At Euro 2020, Mount made one assist in five appearances for the Three Lions as they reached the final, where they ultimately ended up losing to Italy on penalties.

Life Away From The Pitch
Mount is close friends with fellow English midfielder Declan Rice after the pair came through the Chelsea FC youth academy together. Rice ended up being released by Chelsea FC in 2014.
“Mason and Declan are best friends,” said Mount’s father Tony in 2019. “They always have been and still are now. They talk to each other all the time. When Declan got released at 14, we were all devastated.”
Mount is a childhood Portsmouth FC fan. “I always loved going to Portsmouth and training there as it’s my club, who I support,” he explains.

What Have Others Said?
Ex-Chelsea FC midfielder Frank Lampard was full of praise for Mount following his impressive performance for England in their win over Croatia at Euro 2020. “Every manager that works with Mason will say the same. Incredible talented boy, incredible work ethic. There’s something about him that’s so complete to manage.”
England legend Gary Lineker is also a big fan of Mount. In this tweet from January 2016, Lineker praised Mount after he scored the winner in Chelsea FC’s 1-0 victory over London rivals Fulham.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane came out in praise for Mount in April 2021. “Outstanding player. He wants to be an all-round midfielder. I never hear anything negative about him off the pitch, he seems a brilliant young kid, he has gone out on loan [to Vitesse and Derby County], he has done it the hard way. He is a fantastic player.”
