Lingard was sent out on loan to Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Derby County between 2012 and 2015.

Louis van Gaal made Lingard a regular in the Manchester United team following his appointment in May 2014.

The Warrington-born midfielder has scored in the Community Shield, the FA Cup and the League Cup finals at Manchester United.

Lingard was called up to the England national team for the first time in a 2-0 win over Malta in their 2018 World Cup qualifier in October 2016.

He spent a successful six-month loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of the 2020-21 season. So, how much do you know about Lingard’s journey to success? This is his story.

Manchester United

Lingard came through the Manchester United youth ranks after he joined their illustrious academy in 2000 when he was just seven years old.

Sir Alex Ferguson included Lingard in two Manchester United squads but the midfielder didn’t make an appearance before the Scot’s retirement in the summer of 2013.

Leicester City (loan)

Jesse moved to Leicester on loan in November 2012.

He made his debut for the Foxes in a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

The English midfielder made five appearances for Leicester.

Birmingham City (loan)

Lingard made a name for himself during a brief loan stint at Birmingham City in September 2013.

The England Under-21 international scored four goals on his Birmingham debut in a 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

His prolific form continued at St Andrews, with six goals in 13 games before Lingard was recalled from his loan in January 2014.

Brighton and Hove Albion (loan)

The Manchester United midfielder was soon sent packing to Brighton and Hove Albion on loan on 27 February 2014.

Lingard netted his first goal for the Seagulls in a 4-1 win over Leicester City in April.

His short loan spell at Brighton ended with four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.

Derby County (loan)

Lingard was initially part of Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans at Old Trafford after the Dutchman’s appointment in May 2014.

He made his competitive debut for the Red Devils in a 2-1 loss to Swansea City in their opening Premier League game at Old Trafford.

Jesse was sent on loan to Derby County in January until the end of the 2014-15 season.

He ended up with a return of two goals and one assists in 15 games in all competitions.

Manchester United

Lingard established himself as a regular in Van Gaal’s Manchester United squad at the start of the 2015-16 season.

The English midfielder made his first start of the Premier League season in a goalless draw on 17 October 2015.

He scored his first competitive goal for his hometown club in a 2-0 win against West Brom at Old Trafford on 7 November 2015.

Lingard continued his goal-scoring form with strikes against Newcastle United and Stoke City.

Jesse has earned a reputation for scoring big goals throughout his Manchester United career.

He netted for the first time in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge in February 2016. Lingard also scored in a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fourth round.

Van Gaal turned to Jesse in the 90th minute of their FA Cup final at Wembley in May 2016.

And Lingard repaid his manager’s faith with the winner in extra-time to secure a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at the home of English football.

He finished the season with seven goals and eight assists in 44 appearances in all competitions in the 2015-16 season.

Jose Mourinho was appointed as Van Gaal’s successor in May 2016. The move cast some doubt over Lingard’s future at the club, because the Portuguese coach had earned something of a reputation for not focusing on homegrown talent at Chelsea FC.

Jesse scored in successive games at Wembley in a 2-1 victory over defending Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield.

He made his first start of the Premier League campaign in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the derby at Old Trafford.

The English midfielder netted goals against Fenerbahce and Feyenoord in the Europa League group stage.

Mourinho then entrusted Lingard with a starting spot in the League Cup final at Wembley.

The English midfielder then repaid the Portuguese coach by scoring the opening goal in a 3-2 win against Southampton in the Wembley showpiece.

Jesse netted in a 3-1 win against Middlesbrough in the Premier League in March.

In April 2017, Lingard was handed new contract at Manchester United, with his wages believed to be set at around £100,000 per week.

The England international scored five goals and has made three assists in 43 appearances in the 2016-17 season.

After a promising start, the Warrington-born midfielder came into his own at Manchester United in Mourinho’s second season at Old Trafford.

Lingard scored his first goal of the 2017-18 campaign in a 4-1 win over Burton Albion in the League Cup third round. He netted both of Manchester United’s goals in a 2-0 fourth-round win.

His first Premier League goal of the season came in a 4-2 win at Watford before he netted twice in a 3-1 win at Arsenal in December.

Jesse scored goals against West Brom, Burnley and Everton in the Premier League over the festive schedule to continue his prolific form.

Lingard continued his excellent record in the FA Cup with a goal in a 2-0 home win against Derby County in the FA Cup third round in January 2018. Three weeks later, Jesse was on the score sheet in a 4-0 win over Yeovil Town in the FA fourth round.

The England international netted the winner in a 2-1 victory over 2017 Premier League champions Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on 25 February 2018.

His winner took his tally to eight goals and four assists in 24 games in the Premier League.

West Ham United Loan

After failing to hold down a regular spot under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, Lingard was shipped out on loan to West Ham United for the second half of the 2020-21 season.

It proved to be a successful move for the midfielder, who scored nine goals in 16 games for the Hammers before returning to Manchester United in the summer of 2021.

International Career

Jesse was a regular in the England Under-21 set-up before he broke into the senior squad. He netted two goals in 11 appearances for the Under-21 team.

Gareth Southgate handed Lingard his England debut in a 2-0 win over Malta in the 2018 World Cup qualifier in October 2016.

He scored his first senior England goal on 23 March 2018, netting the winner in a 1–0 victory over the Netherlands in a friendly

Personal Life

Lingard’s paternal grandparents are emigrants from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

He is the cousin of Everton and England women’s footballer Gabrielle George.
