Liverpool FC and Manchester City are still “pushing hard” to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund along with Real Madrid this summer, according to reports.

The Athletic is claiming that both of the Premier League clubs continue to hold a strong interest in signing the 19-year-old ahead of next season as they look to bring the England international back to the Premier League.

The same story says that although Real Madrid still consider Bellingham to be a “priority signing” for them, they are aware that they may not be able to compete with the financial strength of the Premier League clubs.

According to the article, Real Madrid have been working hard on a possible deal to sign Bellingham “for months” but the Spanish club are facing competition from two of England’s top clubs.

Real Madrid will continue to push to land Bellingham this summer, but they are aware that any package they are able to offer is likely to fall short of what will be available in England, the story says.

Bellingham is widely considered to be one of English football’s most exciting prospects, and he has been a regular fixture in the Dortmund team this season, scoring 10 goals and making five assists in 24 games in all competitions.

The teenager also scored one goal and made one assist in five games for England at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Liverpool FC have been struggling to find consistent form this season and the Reds are currently 10th in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of the top four.

The Merseyside outfit have lost three of their last four Premier League games and now face a serious uphill battle to get back into the Champions League qualification spots before the end of the season.

And former Aston Villa man Gabriel Agbonlahor feels that Liverpool FC – who lost 3-0 to Wolves on Saturday – will not be able to attract the likes of Bellingham if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“I think the problem, Paul, is that you have been linked with Bellingham,” Agbonlahor told a caller on talkSPORT over the weekend.

“Liverpool fans want Bellingham in, but he is not even going to look twice at coming to Liverpool. He is going to choose Manchester City, Real Madrid, all these other teams if you are not playing in the big competitions.”

Jamie Carragher has backed Arsenal to win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City this season after both teams lost over the weekend.

Arsenal suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat by Sean Dyche’s Everton side at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime, before Manchester City slumped to a 1-0 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The results mean that Arsenal remain five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand over Pep Guardiola’s men.

The defeats for the Gunners and City also allowed both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to close the gap on the top two. United now sit third in the table and eight points behind Arsenal, although they have played one game more than the north Londoners.

Spurs are currently fifth and a point behind fourth-placed Newcastle United having played a game more than the Magpies.

However, former Liverpool FC defender Carragher still thinks that it will be a two-horse race between the top two sides and he is backing Arsenal to take advantage of Manchester City’s stuttering form.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday, Carragher said: “There’s still a long way to go but you’re almost waiting for Manchester City to kick in and to be the Man City we know so well.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

“It just feels like this might be the season where they’re not quite themselves, for lots of different reasons. It’s not the Man City of old.

“This idea that they’re going to do what they’ve done to Liverpool a couple of times in the title race, I’m not sure it will happen. It feels like a different Manchester City that we’re watching right now.”

He added: “There’s so long to go. Neither team should panic. There will be a lot of ups and downs. But I do think Arsenal have the edge, because they’ve been the most impressive team so far. We’re still waiting to see the real Man City but it’s not quite happening for them.

Pep Guardiola

“The two games between those teams are massive but I fancy Arsenal right now.”

Meanwhile, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has praised the Red Devils for their recent form – but says that Erik ten Hag’s side are not in the title race.

The Red Devils were 2-1 winners over Crystal Palace on Saturday and have won three of their last five top-flight outings under their Dutch manager.

Neville feels that the Red Devils should be praised for their upturn in form in recent weeks but does not believe they’ll have what it takes to challenge for the title.

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said of United: “Are we in with a chance again? Look, I don’t think Manchester United will get there, I think they will fall short.

“They’re just not quite there and the Christian Eriksen injury will hurt, but they’re doing really, really well and they’re competing again. They look happy too and that’s a really big thing. You need that. From that point of view United are doing well.

“It’s not ridiculous to say they could win the title. I don’t think they will and I’ve never thought they will this season because it’s a bit early for that but I would be getting worried if I was Manchester City.

“The fans will start getting worried now with the way they’re playing and the way Pep Guardiola is tinkering with the team. United look a happy bunch, City look a bit moody and need to come out of that spell.

“Man City could easily still win the league but Man United are in a good position too.”

Patrice Evra is backing Tottenham to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at home on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester City start the weekend in second place in the table and five points behind leaders Arsenal after having played one game more than the Gunners.

The Citizens have won three of their last five games in the Premier League and with their showdown with Arsenal at The Emirates later in the month looming large, they will be keen to get a positive result in north London this weekend.

Recent history doesn’t make good reading for Pep Guardiola’s men though – the Citizens have lost all four of their games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in all competitions without scoring.

Manchester City are also bidding to win three successive league games for the first time this season, while Spurs have lost three of their last five outings in the top flight.

Former Manchester United star feels that Manchester City are starting to show some signs of weakness and he is tipping Spurs to earn a point in Sunday’s clash.

Patrice Evra

Writing in his column for Betfair, Evra said: “I still don’t understand Manchester City this season. [Joao] Cancelo leaving? Something is wrong there.

“We don’t know what’s happening with this club, the relationship with the players and the manager, people won’t say it out loud but I think something is breaking because they let Zinchenko go to Arsenal too.

“I know players say they’re not playing and they want more time, but when you play with a big team Like Manchester City and you know you’re playing to win four trophies a season, you know you’re not going to play every game.

“The perfect example is Chicharito at United. [Sir Alex] Ferguson would say to him that he’s not going to play for two games but in the third he would play and win the game for us, and because of that they had a great relationship.

“So, those players saying they want to leave because of game time, I’m sorry, I don’t believe that. There’s something wrong happening with the manager.

“The worst part is City are letting their players leave easily. I understand that when a player isn’t happy they should leave, because you should never hold a player against his will, but we’re talking about quality players here that will go to another team and add real quality, United would never do that.

“Spurs will give them a hard time in this one. City don’t have a great record at that stadium so I can see this one being a draw.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Paul Merson feels that the pressure is truly on Manchester City heading into this game – but he is tipping Guardiola’s side to claim a narrow 2-1 victory nonetheless.

Writing in his own column for Sportskeeda, Merson said: “The pressure’s going to be on Manchester City this week.

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola (Photo: Oleh Dubyna / depositphotos.com)

“They’ll probably be eight points behind Arsenal when they play this game, and they can’t afford anything less than a win here. If they don’t beat Tottenham, I don’t see how they can make up the difference.”

Merson added: “Something has definitely happened with Joao Cancelo. I know he’s come out and denied it, but something’s gone on. He was one of the best players in the Premier League last season, and now he’s on loan at Bayern Munich – I don’t see how that deal happens.

“Man City are playing on a lot of fronts, and an injury could end their season. Cancelo has played in the Champions League and he’s been a big player for City. I’m shocked, and I don’t believe that nothing’s happened.

“Manchester City have a nice fixture list in the Premier League after this game, and this is a big match. Tottenham will sit back and make it hard for them, but City should be able to win this game.”

Rio Ferdinand is backing Arsenal to go all the way and win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 this season.

The Gunners are currently five points clear of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand at the halfway point of the campaign as Mikel Arteta looks to steer his side to Premier League glory.

Arsenal were busy in the January transfer window and recruited Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho to bolster their squad for the second half of the campaign.

The north London side have been in excellent form this term and have only dropped points on three occasions to help them establish their impressive lead at the top of the table.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that the Gunners have what it takes to go all the way this season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said of the title race: “I think it’s a wrap. I’ve got to be honest, I do.

“No matter what results Arsenal get against Man City, I still think Arsenal have enough confidence, quality and calmness to take the title.”

Arsenal are back in Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when they travel to take on Everton in what will be the Toffees’ first league game since having appointed Sean Dyche as their new manager.

Manchester City, meanwhile, travel to face Tottenham Hotspur in north London on Sunday afternoon. Arsenal and Manchester City will face off in their first league meeting of the season at The Emirates on Wednesday 15 February.

Meanwhile, some eyebrows were raised at Arsenal’s move to sign Italy international Jorginho from Chelsea FC on a one-and-a-half year contract, with the option for a further year, this week.

However, the 31-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience, and former Liverpool FC midfielder Danny Murphy reckons that the move will end up paying dividends for the Gunners as they continue to chase the title in the second half of the season.

“It’s a really clever piece of business that,” Murphy told talkSPORT when asked about Arsenal’s move for Jorginho.

Mikel Arteta

“[Thomas] Partey is struggling a bit, he doesn’t tend to play a full season. He came off at half-time in the City game. You need some cover.

“I think he is somebody who you know will cope with any high pressure group he’s put into, whether it’s off the bench or starting. If they’re still in the race with 10 games to go – which they should be – and Partey’s injured then Jorginho comes in the team and you know what you’re going to get.

“He doesn’t quite have Partey’s physicality but knitting the game together, talking to people around him, knowing the position.

“Anyone doubting him that move, I don’t see where the scepticism comes from to be honest with you. For the price – what is it? £12m? – It’s a great piece of business that.”

Chris Sutton is backing Manchester City to book their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at The Etihad on Friday night.

The fourth-round clash is something of a dress rehearsal for the Premier League meeting between the two sides at The Emirates in mid-February, with Arsenal currently leading City at the top of the table by five points with a game in hand.

The Gunners head into the game on the back of their impressive 3-2 win over Manchester United at The Emirates last Sunday after Manchester City had beaten Wolves 3-0 earlier in the day.

Mikel Arteta’s side have won four of their last five games in the Premier League and will be hoping to carry that momentum into Friday night’s showdown – but former Chelsea FC star Sutton feels that Pep Guardiola’s hosts will edge the contest.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Sutton said: “This is a brilliant tie to get the fourth round started and it is going to be interesting to see how both managers approach it, because they meet again in the Premier League in the middle of February.

Chris Sutton

“City boss Pep Guardiola always selects strong teams in the domestic cups, but we don’t know how big Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will go, given his side’s position at the top of the table.

“The FA Cup clearly won’t be Arteta’s priority, but his side have got so much momentum at the moment while City are still not at their fluid best.

“I am sure it will be all smiles between the pair of them beforehand, because Arteta was one of Guardiola’s assistants at City before taking the Gunners job, but this is going to be a fiercely fought contest – which I think City will edge.”

Arteta, who was previously Guardiola’s assistant coach at Manchester City, insists that Arsenal’s position as the Citizens’ main challenger for the title this season will not affect his relationship with his former boss.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference this week, the Arsenal manager underlined the important role Guardiola has played in helping to shape his career as a coach.

Asked if his relationship with Guardiola has changed now that Arsenal are fighting for the title, Arteta replied: “I always hoped that [a title challenge] was going to be the case one day, and it’s happening this season but that’s not going to change any friendship or the moments that we have, how important he is in my life or how important he is in my profession.

“We are both willing to win and defend our clubs in the best possible way, and that has always been the case since day one.”

Gunners striker Eddie Nketiah has been earning praise for his solid performances for the north London side since having been brought into the team following the injury to Gabriel Jesus.

The 23-year-old forward has netted seven goals in his last seven appearances for the Gunners and is currently the club’s top scorer this season with nine strikes to his name.

Asked whether the forward can maintain his current form, Arteta replied: “That’s the challenge we all have, not only Eddie, to be not at that level but at a better level every single day.

“Eddie has been very consistent and I think he has surprised a few people with how he responded to the huge challenge and demands he had after Gabriel [Jesus] got injured. We are positive he can get much better, evolve and still continue to develop.”

Patrice Evra is tipping Manchester United to continue their mini-resurgence under Erik ten Hag by claiming a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in Saturday’s derby showdown.

The Red Devils are preparing to welcome their bitter local rivals to Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime as they look to make it five wins on the bounce in the English top flight.

Manchester United start the weekend in fourth place in the Premier League table and only four points behind second-placed Manchester City, who are second and five points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

A win for Ten Hag’s side on Saturday would move them to within just one point of Pep Guardiola’s men and would lay down a marker for the rest of the season as United chase a top-four finish in the Dutchman’s first campaign in charge.

City head into the game having only won three of their last five games in the English top flight but still having scored more goals (45) than any other team in the league.

Former Red Devils and France defender Evra admits that it’s difficult to predict Saturday’s game, but he is tipping Manchester United to claim a narrow victory and win the derby bragging rights.

Writing in his column for Betfair, Evra said: “We can hurt City, I will never disrespect City, but I think this one is a 50/50 game.

“Sometimes though, when City start well and develop their football in the game you can tell it’s going to be a long day. City are a really, really strong side and it’s a big test for us.

Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag (Photo: Mark Cosgrove / depositphotos.com)

“It’s a tough one to predict, Mahrez is on fire for City at the moment. It’s a derby so I’m not expecting a big score.

“I can see it being 2-1 to United, but equally it wouldn’t be surprising to see City win, it could go either way. It can’t be like the last match, they have to learn from that.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea FC star Chris Sutton feels that the game will go the other way, and is tipping Guardiola’s side to claim a 2-1 victory against their rivals at Old Trafford.

Sutton feels that this game will be a closely-contested affair, but he is ultimately confident that the visiting team will claim all three points.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Sutton said: “I am very clear in my mind about how this game will go.

“Manchester United have really improved under Erik ten Hag, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for their progress since the start of the season.

“There is something not quite right about Manchester City, who have not been firing on all cylinders since the season resumed after the World Cup, but I am still expecting them to win.

“Some City players like Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker look out of form, and even Kevin de Bruyne has been below his best, but part of their problem is down to what is known as ‘Pep Roulette’ – Pep Guardiola’s ever-changing team selections.

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola (Photo: Oleh Dubyna / depositphotos.com)

“He gambled in the Carabao Cup against Southampton on Wednesday, when Kalvin Phillips came into midfield for his first start, and it didn’t pay off.

“Guardiola says he has had some “ridiculous” ideas about how his side will beat United, but I am pretty sure it will include giving Erling Haaland a start. He will play his best side and, if they perform anything like they can do, they will win – it’s as simple as that.

“I was very confident City would absolutely smash United in October, and it turned out I didn’t go big enough with my prediction – I said 4-1 and it ended up 6-3. It will be a lot closer this time, but Pep will still collect the points.”

Pep Guardiola has warned his Manchester City players that they must react quickly following their surprise League Cup exit as they prepare for Saturday’s derby showdown with Manchester United.

The Citizens suffered a 2-0 defeat by Southampton at St Mary’s in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, with first-half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo settling the encounter.

Manchester City’s players must now dust themselves down as they prepare for their crunch clash against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime.

The Red Devils have been in good form lately and have won four of their last five Premier League games to place them fourth in the table heading into this weekend’s showdown.

And Guardiola is confident that his players have the required mentality to bounce back from the disappointment on Wednesday night’s defeat.

Asked if he is expecting a reaction from his players for the derby, Guardiola said: “I think it is different, a different competition but of course if we perform in this way we will not have chance.

“I know the moment they have and many years they were looking forward to stay in this position so we know exactly what we have to do to play better so we will try to do it.”

Manchester City head into the game knowing that a win would take them to within two points of leaders Arsenal, who will travel to take on north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag

Meanwhile, Manchester United are believed to be closing in on the signing of Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst from Burnley.

Reports have suggested that the Red Devils have a “deal in principle” in place to sign the 30-year-old this month but the move has not yet officially gone through.

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra reckons that he could be a good addition to Ten Hag’s squad this month, comparing him to former Arsenal and Chelsea FC front-man Olivier Giroud.

“Reports are saying that Wout Weghorst looks set to sign for Manchester United, we’ve been here before, we’ve had so many players looking set to sign and we need to be careful, but he is a good player,” Evra told Betfair.

“As a player, what I like about him is he reminds me a little bit of Olivier Giroud. He plays with his back to goal, with his stamina, he’s strong physically and he knows how to keep the ball.

“He knows how to play in that fixed position, players like Rashford and all the team will enjoy playing with a player like that. Like Giroud, sometimes you just pass them the ball and you can run behind them.

“He’s a good finisher and he can finish with both feet. He’s strong in the air. That’s the kind of striker that I can see being successful if they sign for United.

“You can see that he’s not just a goal scorer, you can see that Ten Hag wants to have more control in matches and I think United’s problem is they are winning but they don’t control the games for 90 minutes and with those kinds of players, they let you breathe when you are under pressure.

“You can play the ball to him, on his chest, on his head and he will keep the ball or can make assists for other players. Tactically and technically, I think he could be a really interesting player for United.”

Chris Sutton is backing Manchester City to coast to a 3-0 victory away to Chelsea FC on Thursday night and pile the pressure on Graham Potter.

Chelsea FC have been struggling to find consistent form in recent weeks and they have only won one of their last five Premier League games, slumping to a 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest last time out.

Their poor run of form has caused them to drop down into ninth place in the Premier League table and has left them significantly off the pace in the race to secure a top-four finish this season.

Manchester City head to south west London looking to bounce back to winning ways in the wake of their frustrating 1-1 draw against Everton at The Etihad last time out.

As things stand, Pep Guardiola’s men are seven points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League table, but the Citizens may find themselves 10 points behind the Gunners by the time they kick off on Thursday, with the north London set to host Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Former Blues star Sutton has not been impressed by what he has seen from Chelsea FC under their new manager so far and he is tipping Manchester City to claim a dominant win on Thursday night.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Sutton said: “I like Graham Potter and I want him to do well at Stamford Bridge but if you were a Chelsea fan you would be a bit worried about what you had seen under him so far.

“His side were lucky to escape with a point against Forest on Sunday but the result isn’t the problem, it’s more the manner they got it.

Chris Sutton

Ex-Chelsea FC striker Chris Sutton (Photo: BT Sport)

“I am a Potter fan but I am not seeing any style or identity from his team at the moment, and they will need to put up much more of a fight against City.

“I think Pep Guardiola’s side will play with some anger and take out some of the frustration of their draw with Everton here. Chelsea will pose a threat on the break, but they could be overwhelmed at the other end.”

With the January transfer window now open, Chelsea FC are likely to be on the lookout for a number of reinforcements as they aim to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.

And former Liverpool FC star Jamie Carragher feels that the Blues are likely to be one of the busier clubs in the English top flight in the current transfer market.

Jamie Carragher

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Chelsea may be the busiest team in this January transfer window – because every time I pick up a paper I see they’re signing someone! It feels like they’re going for every player in the world!

“It seems to take me back to when Roman Abramovich first came in and I thought with him leaving the club, it might be the end of that. But it doesn’t seem to be the case, certainly with the new regime at Chelsea.

“It looks like they’re trying to throw their money around to try and get in the best players to the club, which is what Chelsea are used to in the last 10 to 15 years.

“I thought it may stop a little, it looks like Todd Boehly are scouting the air for players and I expect them to be busy.”

Patrice Evra believes that Arsenal have what it takes to go on and win the Premier League this season.

The north London side are currently five points clear at the top of the English top flight and have earned lots of praise for their strong performances this season.

Their only defeat so far this term came in a 3-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford back at the start of September – and the only other blip on their otherwise perfect record was their 1-1 draw against Southampton in October.

Arsenal continued their strong form by coming from a goal down to claim a 3-1 victory against West Ham United at The Emirates on Boxing Day, a result which moved them eight points clear of Manchester City before Pep Guardiola’s men beat Leeds United 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Next up for the Gunners is a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on New Year’s Eve, before home game against Newcastle United on 3 January.

Former Manchester United full-back Evra believes that Mikel Arteta’s side have already demonstrated that they have what it takes to go all the way in the title race this season and he is backing them to lift the trophy for the first time since 2004.

Writing in his column for Betfair, Evra said about who he thinks will win the title: “I still want to say City but, hands up, Arsenal. I know I’m going to make the Arsenal fans happy, I love the way they play. I always believed in Arteta, they gave him more time and look at what they are doing now.

“I think the Arsenal fans that say they won’t win the league say it because they are scared of having false hope and the other fans that say it are jealous and don’t want them to win the league.

Sky Sports pundit Patrice Evra

Sky Sports pundit Patrice Evra

“As a former United player, they (Arsenal) deserve to win the league, they’ve beaten big teams, and how the second part goes depends on this transfer window. I will say, my opinion is judged on what has happened in the first half. Like I keep saying, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Arsenal have been credited with an interest in signing Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhailo Mudryk in recent days.

Arsenal boss Arteta was quizzed about whether the Gunners are considering a move for the 23-year-old after the Gunners’ win over West Ham, but the Spaniard remained coy about the transfer rumours.

Asked whether there’s any truth to Arsenal’s links to Mudryk, Arteta replied: “You know that I never speak to other players that are not with us.

“And it might be that you have to ask me the question but we said that we will try to find ways to strengthen the team. We will find the right players and that’s all I can say.”

Mudryk watched the Arsenal win over West Ham United on Boxing Day and shared a photo of the match on TV on his Instagram story.

However, Arteta was not reading too much into the winger’s post on social media. “It’s a good thing for England that you don’t have many other matches in other countries,” he replied when asked about Mudryk’s post. “We are the only ones playing through Christmas so hopefully, a lot of people watched our game and we gave them a good show.”

Meanwhile, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano said on Thursday morning that Shakhtar were due to hold fresh talks with Arsenal about the proposed transfer of Mudryk.

Posting on Twitter, Romano wrote: “Shakhtar CEO Palkin: ‘Now, literally in five minutes, I will have a new phone call conversation with Arsenal for Mykhaylo Mudryk deal.'”

Gary Neville is backing Arsenal to finish in the top four this season – but is fully expecting to see Manchester City coast to the Premier League title.

Arsenal are leading the way at the top of the English top flight after a flying start in which they have won all but two of their games this season.

The Gunners underlined their title credentials on Sunday with a 1-0 victory away to Chelsea FC and they currently sit two points clear of defending champions Manchester City, who are eyeing their third straight title.

However, despite Arsenal’s fine start to the new campaign, former Manchester United defender Neville feels that the Gunners have it all to prove that they won’t “crumble” when the title race approaches its conclusion in the spring.

Speaking on The Overlap on YouTube, Neville said: “I watched the first half of the Chelsea and Arsenal game – I didn’t see much of the second half, but Arsenal’s first half display was fantastic. The authority they had on the game, they looked by far the better team and it was a proper performance from Arsenal.

“I saw Manchester United at Stamford Bridge a couple weeks ago and they were nothing like that. Chelsea aren’t in the strongest of moments, but Arsenal are doing everything right in this moment of time.

“Last season we had our reservations about Mikel Arteta, but we wanted to be proved wrong because I like the manager and his style of football. We have 25 matches left in the season, with the massive disruption of the World Cup, but I do see Arsenal getting in the top four this season.

“If Arsenal lose a couple games and the teams below you win those games, the pressure now ramps up and that is when we’ll find out if Arsenal can handle the pressure. The big moment will come in February and March where we will see what Arsenal are made of.

“The only thing Arsenal have proven in the last few years is that they crumble at the end of the season, until I see that they don’t, I’ll still have that doubt. Why would I not?”

Neville added: “Manchester City will win the Premier League by 10 to 15 points this season. I’ve seen it before when you’ve got a team that’s so exceptional – we had that a few times with Manchester United when I was playing, where you just know a team just hasn’t got it in them to go all the way to challenge the top team.

“If Arsenal do that, it will be unbelievable, and I want City to be pushed, but it won’t happen.”

Arsenal were knocked out of the League Cup on Wednesday night after they suffered a surprise 3-1 home defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion at The Emirates.

The Gunners will now attempt to get back to winning ways when they take on Wolves away from home on Saturday evening in the Premier League.

With less than two months until the January transfer window opens, attentions will start to turn towards potential inbound and outbound transfers in the New Year at The Emirates.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was asked about whether he had any early plans for the forthcoming transfer window on Wednesday night, and the Spanish head coach hinted that the Gunners could do some business.

Asked if he will make changes to his squad in the January transfer window, Arteta replied: “Well that’s a window that is open and I will have to discuss the options that we have, the capacity that we have to make those changes and be in the market for any opportunity. We don’t know what is going to happen – all of our options are open.”

He added: “I always said from day one that we have a shorter squad because at the end we left some players, and as well if everyone is available and everyone can play the minutes, we are OK, but at the moment we have some injuries.

“We know what it is, but it’s nothing new. I said it the first day after the transfer window.”
